Congratulations to Emma Lineham 8Otter, Ellie Lambert 8Otter, Evie Watterson 8Story and Lily Barkes 8Story, who won the West Sussex Inter-Schools Literature Quiz on Thursday 8th March at Chichester College, against more than 20 other teams. Bishop Luffa had 4 teams of 4 teams taking part, as well as 8 reserves who played along but were not eligible to win. Our D team came joint 3rd, and our two other teams took top 10 places.
Pupils are required to have excellent general book knowledge, research the life and work of four specific authors, and answer incredibly tough questions on specific books by those authors. This year those were Black Knight by Andy Briggs, Headmaster of Doom by Jamie Thomson, Sea by Sarah Driver and All the Things That Could Go Wrong by Stewart Foster. There are four rounds of questions plus four visual rounds and a Welcome round, and prizes for the winners of each round. Our C team beat our winning A team and two other teams to win a tie-break on one of the rounds. Mrs Regan, the Librarian, said ‘all 24 pupils have shown incredible commitment, determination and team spirit in preparing for this quiz. I am proud not only of their achievements but their conduct today and the way they embody the values of our school. It’s not often reading wins you a trophy so I know they are delighted with their win – as am I!’
Thursday 1st March was World Book Day and staff and pupils across Bishop Luffa School came together in spite of the snow and bitter cold to celebrate our love of books. The Library ran events and activities all week from Star Wars papercraft to a big book giveaway, and our ever popular ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner’ competition (many pupils were stumped by the pink umbrella). Pupils also had to comb the school to find teachers with book title or author badges, and match up the pairs to win a prize. Teachers won a bonus treat if they managed to find their partner too! The celebrations ended on World Book Day with a Drop Everything and Read session during registration for staff and pupils alike, and some time to reflect on the value of books and stories to us as individuals and as a society. Pupils were all issued with their £1 book token to spend in their local bookshop and discover a new favourite read.
Congratulations to Wilf Kieran, Veronica Smirnova and Evie Watterson for winning the Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner competition, and Manka Vecsi for winning the Book Pairs competition, and thanks to all who took part in our celebrations!
